Leading European carrier British Airways started off new flight operations to Sri Lanka from yesterday 15th April 2013, after one and a half decades’ lapse since the flights were suspended in 1990’s owing to the island’s security situation prevailing at the time. The first flight Boeing 777 -BA 2043 operated by a Sri Lanka Pilot Mr. Kiran Mediwaka landed in Sri Lanka flying from Gatwick via Male at 12.45 hrs local time carrying 77 passengers on board including the CEO of British Air, VIP officials and a group of high profile media crew from UK.
